Department of Teacher Education, Sibsagar University (former Sibsagar College of Teachers Education) came into existence on 1st July 2015 as Sibsagar
College of Teachers Education (CTE). Though Sibsagar CTE was formally started on 1st July, 2015, its origin can be traced back to the Governing Body
meeting of Sibsagar College, Joysagar (at present Sibsagar University) held on 12th April, 2007, which adopted that very resolution to establish a
secondary teacher education institution under the management of former Sibsagar College, Joysagar vide its resolution no 4(c). After that, with the
tireless efforts of the administration of former Sibsagar College, Joysagar, and a handful of faculty members of the college and the unstinted support
of the people of the area as a whole from 2007 to 2015, Sibsagar CTE has received formal recognition from NCTE on 3rd March, 2015. The NCTE(ERC) granted
formal recognition to Sibsagar CTE for conducting a two-year B.Ed. Programme with an annual intake of 50 (one unit) from the academic session 2015-2016
under clause 7(16) of NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Regulations, 2014 vide letter No. -182.6.20/ERCAPP1210/ B.Ed/2015/30728 dated 03/03/2015.
Besides this, it has an affiliation from Dibrugarh University to run a two-year B.Ed Programme from the academic session 2015-2016 vide Dibrugarh
University letter no. DU/RG/DCDC/SCTE/Perm.Major/2015-2016/8748 dated 30.04.2015 in pursuance of the Resolution No. (36) of the 325th Meeting of the
Executive Council.
In the year 2023, its parent institution, Sibsagar College, Joysagar, was upgraded to Sibsagar University by the Government of Assam, vide Govt.
Notification No. LGL.38/2023/34 dated 1st December 2023. Accordingly, management and stakeholders of the Sibsagar CTE and Sibsagar University
(former Sibsagar College, Joysagar) have decided to withdraw affiliation of Sibsagar CTE from Dibrugarh University, and merge it with its parent
institution, Sibsagar University, as the 'Department of Teacher Education' from the academic session 2025-2026. As such, a written representation
was made to the NCTE (ERC) requesting the same.
NCTE (ERC) permitted to convert Sibsagar CTE to Department of Teacher Education, Sibsagar, University vide its decision no 30 (application No ERCAPPl2lO)
of its 367th Meeting held on 04th June 2025. Thus, Sibsagar CTE is merged with the Sibsagar University from 04th June 2025 with a new nomenclature,
Department of Teacher Education, Sibsagar University.
